From profound silence to orchestral power: this is the wide-ranging spectrum of sound and color of saxophonist and composer Kika Sprangers.
With her expressive, melodic, and dark saxophone sound, she is considered one of the most influential and leading voices in the contemporary Dutch jazz scene. This exceptional status was impressively underscored in 2025 when she won the prestigious Edison Jazz Nationaal Award for her album (In)finity.
Her playing is often compared by critics to a painting by Mark Rothko: within her musical color fields lie hidden emotional undercurrents that inevitably captivate the audience.
On their release tour for the brand-new album, the Kika Sprangers Quintet presents the project river, river at the rejazz-festival – Kika Sprangers’ most personal work to date.
The music uses the river as a powerful metaphor for human life: how it evolves, gently meandering at times, or carving its path in wild torrents.
Together with her top-tier quintet, Sprangers creates an engaging and touching sound world.
A distinct hallmark of the ensemble is the mostly wordless, soaring voice of singer Anna Serierse, which merges seamlessly with the warm saxophone sound in adventurous live interaction and improvisation, shaping a dense, collective band sound.
Das in Berlin ansässige Trio **Y** (ausgesprochen: „four star Y“) wurde bereits 2014 gegründet und vereint mit Liz Kosack, dem norwegischen E-Bassisten Dan Peter Sundland und dem australischen Schlagzeuger Steve Heather drei radikale Freigeister der internationalen Improvisationsszene.
Das Trio zelebriert einen heftigen, treibenden und psychedelischen Mix, der lässig in Richtung Free-Rock’n’Roll und Space-Jazz steuert, ohne dabei in gängige Klischees zu verfallen.
Sundlands expressives, perkussives Bassspiel und Heathers ungezähmte Groove-Virtuosität bilden das perfekte Fundament für Kosacks interdimensionale Synthesizer-Exkursionen. Das Ergebnis ist eine abenteuerliche Klangkunst-Reise, die das freiStil magazine anlässlich ihres 2024er Debütalbums treffend als „grenzgenial“ und „Klangkunst in der vierten Dimension“ feierte.
