“Liz Kosack breaks with the traditional role clichés of her instrument. On her synthesizers, she creates dense, highly original soundscapes full of organic expressiveness that completely blur the boundaries between analog and digital music.” – SWR Jazz Prize Jury

The mysterious US keyboardist and visual artist Liz Kosack (recipient of the 2019 SWR Jazz Prize) is an absolute anomaly in the global experimental music scene.

As a synthesist, she pushes her instrument to the very limits of its expressive potential, extracting a deeply organic, retro-futuristic language from electronic sounds.

Originally hailing from the coast of Maine, her journey took her via New York to the Berlin wilderness in 2013, where she is now active across multiple mediums – including the KIM Collective as well as formations such as VAX, Nick Dunston’s Skultura, or MeoW!.

A central part of her identity is mask-making: performing on stage mostly masked, she selectively uses her visual art to playfully construct and simultaneously dismantle concepts of identity and reality.

The Berlin-based trio **Y** (pronounced: “four star Y”) was founded back in 2014 and unites Liz Kosack, Norwegian electric bassist Dan Peter Sundland, and Australian drummer Steve Heather – three radical free spirits of the international improvisation scene.

The trio celebrates a fierce, driving, and psychedelic mix that casually steers toward free rock ‘n’ roll and space jazz without falling into gängige clichés.

Sundland’s expressive, percussive bass playing and Heather’s untamed groove virtuosity form the perfect foundation for Kosack’s interdimensional synthesizer excursions.

The result is an adventurous journey into sound art, which freiStil magazine aptly praised as “borderline genius” and “sound art in the fourth dimension” upon the release of their 2024 debut album.

“This is another document of international sound artists living in Berlin, and (…) one of the most radical because it is one of the sharpest. (…) An adventurous journey in the fourth dimension. Five stars!” – freiStil magazine
