“It is not often one hears such musical poetry as that coming from the pen and piano of Antje Rößeler.” – Nils Landgren

Antje Rößeler – piano between width and density

Antje Rößeler is an artist with a fine sense for nuances. Her piano playing is all about the joy of discovery and inner depth, of Nordic vastness and Berlin roots. She moves effortlessly between composition and improvisation, between jazz, classical music and the freedom to rethink structures. Her path has taken her from Berlin via Dresden to Stockholm, Helsinki and Århus – and in all these cities, she has collected sounds, experiences and impulses that shine through in her playing today like sparkling splinters of a musical mosaic.

Antje focuses mainly on trio formations, and she creates compositions that are a beautiful balance of delicate storytelling and energetic outbursts. Her tunes are like little journeys – emotionally condensed, form-conscious and full of surprising twists and turns. She absolutely shines as a soloist too, with her rich, expressive style that is so sensitive, spontaneous and always in the moment.

The long-time duo with saxophonist Birgitta Flick holds a special place in Antje Rößeler’s musical work – and we’re excited to welcome them on the final night of this year’s festival. With a deep sense of trust and curiosity, the two artists navigate the space between structure and freedom, creating music that feels both spontaneous and intimate. Their latest album Sending a Phoenix recorded at the legendary Hansa Studios, offers a moving exploration of sound, closeness, and the courage to stay open.
